On April 8th of 2024, a total solar eclipse passed over Mexico, the U.S. and Canada, skywatchers and tens of millions of people can watch the whole process.
“Nothing prepared me for the intense emotions I felt as Baily’s beads and the “diamond ring” effect gave way to totality. Temperatures dropped as a 360-degree sunset fell in a stormy-looking sky, and the sun released pink ribbons of light that danced in its corona.” A lady who witnessed the whole process of the total solar eclipse said.
In this total solar eclipse, in addition to the commonly used eclipse glasses certified by ISO 12312-2 standards, a tool commonly used by welders also attracted the high attention of the general public - welding lenses.
“That’s great and that’s true you can buy and get the viewing glasses to see eclipse, but there’s many times something that you have around you will probably work just fine.” Said John, a man who usually does DIY welding stuff at home.
To prevent something, first we need to know what we are dealing with.
In normal times, if you just take a glance at the sun, which is perfectly fine, you will find the sunlight harsh, so you will unconsciously blink quickly or close your eyes. However, the sun's harmful ultraviolet and infrared rays are invisible to you. A total solar eclipse will last about 4 minutes, and the sun is 500,000 times brighter in visible light during the day than a full moon, so if you don't use the right tools to protect your eyes, you can suffer permanent damage! Such damage is irreversible and can only be mitigated by taking steps to alleviate it, or it can get worse!
As shown below, sunlight consists mainly of ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light, with infrared-ultraviolet light being the most predominant cause of damage to our eyes.
Ultraviolet: 200-400nm (invisible)
Infrared: 50-2500nm (invisible)
And welding lenses are based on optical glass, using colorants such as iron oxide, cobalt oxide and chromium oxide, in addition to a certain amount of cerium oxide to increase the absorption of ultraviolet rays, which can block 99.9% of UV&IR rays.
Oudopanda's lenses comply with the American safety standard ANSI.Z87.1, and the optical grade meets highest standard 1/1/1/1.

Welding is a highly skilled and demanding profession that requires the right equipment to do the job safely and effectively. One of the most important pieces of equipment a welder can have is the right welding lens.
When it comes to welding lenses, there is no “one size fits all” solution. Different welding jobs require different welding lenses, and having a variety of options is crucial.
At Oudopanda, each lens has its own features and benefits, but what's the same is that they all ensure you work safely while enhancing your welding experience, and are extremely durable, offering HD optics, excellent clarity and maximum protection.
